A Short History of The Ribble Valley
The Ribble Valley has a rich history dating back to Roman times, with evidence of Roman settlements and roads still visible in the area. Ribchester Roman Museum is a great place to explore this in more detail.
There is also a wealth of historical sites scattered throughout the region. For example, the 14th century Whalley Abbey, the medieval Clitheroe Castle and Cromwell’s Bridge sit within the valley, carved out by the River Ribble.
In addition to this rich history, the area has served as inspiration to the much celebrated author JRR Tolkein, who attended Stonyhurst College.
Due to many mills and factories producing cotton and woo in nearby towns such as Blackburn and Burnley, the Ribble Valley became a centre for the textile industry in the 18th and 19th centuries.
However, in more recent times, the Ribble Valley has become a popular tourist destination. This is thanks to its beautiful scenery, rich history, and many cultural attractions.
Overall, the Ribble Valley has undergone many changes throughout its long and varied history, but it remains an important part of Lancashire’s heritage and identity.
